For 2 miles or less: Go by bike
From an interview about last year's "bike to work" week: "Going by bike really is a no-brainer: Save commuting costs, do something good for you, and do something good for the environment as well".
Don't consider "these few miles" a drop in the ocean only, compared to the hundreds of long-distance miles you may also do. According to a brochure from the "1 world 2 wheels" initiative, 40 percent of all trips are within 2 miles from home. Plus, 60 percent of the pollution created by automobile emissions happens in the first few minutes of operation - meaning during the 2 miles you're going to go by bike in the future! :o)
