Well, that might be a little overstated. What is meant is basically: don't throw away food but plan accordingly. According to the US dept. of Agriculture more than 3000 pounds of food are wasted in America every second. That costs energy and resources for production, for transport - and finally for transporting the trash away. And finally: if you consider animals not only "resources", it needlessly costs life.
