3/31/2011 -- Permissible levels
Any news worth a blog post this month? Learnt that radioactivity is just a matter of "permissible levels", and that even if levels are exceeded 1250 times (of whatever a permissible level of poison is), the impact on the environment is "comparatively small, as the material will be dispersed in the sea".
Disturbingly, roughly a year ago I heared very similar statements from another surely unbiased company: "The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.". We continue to see sealife washing up dead on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, one year after this oil "spill", covered up with toxins.
The last major nuclear "spill" contaminates the environment above "permissible levels" in Europe still today, after 25 years.
How much of our environment needs to be poisoned, and to which levels, until this civilization values life higher than iPods, SUVs and ACs?
